Speculative Design
BRIEF
Create a design for the future, to:
Challenge single-use plastics
Encourage responsible recycling
Offset carbon footprint
Benefit the environment
SUMMARY
In the future, consumers will earn carbon credits through day-to-day behaviours and interactions. The credits will build environmental projects to benefit humanity and the planet.
With a focus on the Internet of Things whereby objects and devices are connected to the internet by sensors, this project demonstrates how water stations and reusable bottles will be provided by consumers using carbon offsets earned through responsible recycling.
PROCESS
I created a short film, called Squirt, which you can view at the bottom.
Use Case
Reuse of everyday consumer food and drink containers.
Flow
On warm, sunny days Susan likes to buy her lunch from her favourite deli and take it to the park. Afterwards, she scans her lunch containers with her watch and is guided to the nearest reuse point.
Upon returning the items she receives credit to her account…
Problem Statement
“When I bring my lunch to the park, I want to reuse my containers responsibly so I can generate no waste”
WHY?
WHAT?
WHEN?
WHO?
HOW?
1
Susan selects a project from a programme to strive towards, using her carbon offset credits
2
A deposit is paid on reusable containers which are provided by outlets with take-out food and drinks offerings
3
On return of the containers to a reuse facility the deposit is refunded and carbon points are awarded to the consumer
DELIVERED
